Netflix‘s Frankenstein remake may be getting all of the attention this month from casual horror fans, but it’s not your only option this month.
By sheer coincidence, two of this month’s most notable horror titles revolve around werewolves. So we threw in a film about vampires for variety.
Keep reading to learn more about Watch With Us‘ picks for the three great horror movies to watch on Hulu, HBO Max and Prime Video.
Our picks include a wildly over-the-top horror action movie, a remake of a classic and the first leading role of a Hollywood superstar.
‘Werewolves’ (2024)
The premise of Werewolves is enjoyably absurd, and kind of a mix between The Purge and The Wolfman. Before the film’s story, anyone on Earth who was exposed to the supermoon was transformed into a murderous werewolf. One year later, a group of scientists is trying to come up with a cure or a vaccine, while everyone else is fortifying their homes against another werewolf attack.
Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo) works with Dr. Amy Chen (Katrina Law) and others on the potential cure, even though it leaves his sister-in-law, Lucy Marshall (Ilfenesh Hadera), and her daughter, Emma (Kamdynn Gary), vulnerable to attack. When the experiment goes wrong, Wesley and Amy need to reach his home before they’re spotted and murdered by the werewolves.
Werewolves is streaming on Hulu.
‘The Wolfman’ (2010)
The Wolfman is only the second most recent reboot of Universal’s classic monster franchise, but it’s the better one. Benicio del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a man living in the late 19th century who returns home after his brother, Ben (Simon Merrells), is murdered by a werewolf. That also forces Lawrence to reunite with his estranged father, Sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins).
During a subsequent werewolf attack, Lawrence is bitten and infected. As the curse overtakes him, Lawrence desperately tries to find a cure. What he discovers instead is a dark family secret that will bring him into conflict with his true enemy. Emily Blunt also stars in the film as Gwen Conliffe, Ben’s lover and the woman who is loved by Lawrence. But with a battle between two werewolves looming, Lawrence may not be able to protect Gwen.
The Wolfman is on HBO Max.
‘Once Bitten’ (1985)
Forty years ago this month, Jim Carrey had his first leading role in Once Bitten, a horror comedy that cast him as a teenager when he was really 223. For the time, that must have meant he was kind of young to be playing an actual high school student by Hollywood standards. Mark Kendall (Carrey) is a virgin who would love to be with his girlfriend, Robin Pierce (Karen Kopins), for his first time. However, the Countess (Lauren Hutton) found him first.
Since the Countess needs the blood of a virgin to survive, she seduces Mark and begins turning him into a vampire. Mark is still in love with Robin despite their relationship issues, and she may be the only one who can pull him out of the Countess’ control before he’s completely transformed.
Once Bitten is streaming on Prime Video.
