Megan, born Megan Pete, filed the defamation suit in October 2024, in connection to the July 2020 Tory Lanez shooting case. In December 2022, a jury convicted the Toronto rapper in the shooting. In August 2023, a judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

While on the stand at a federal courthouse in Miami, she alleged that Cooper participated in a targeted and coordinated social media campaign to intimidate, harass, and defame her. These are the same claims in her lawsuit. It alleges that Cooper spread falsehoods about the Houston rapper to punish her and attempt to discredit her after publicly naming Lanez as her shooter.
On the stand, Megan referenced social media posts in which she accused Gramz of attacking her character. She also accused the blogger of labeling her a liar and mentally ill. According to ABC News, she said:
“She’s created a space for a lot of people to come speak negatively about me. I felt like nobody cared that I was shot. I know everyone was making jokes about it.”
In addition to social media posts on display, the jury also saw X-ray photos of Megan’s feet with bullet fragments following the 2020 shooting.

While on the stand, Megan had an emotional moment and broke down in tears as she reviewed Gramz’s social media posts. Megan claimed that Gramz’s posts, allegedly urging the public to doubt the rapper’s story, ultimately led her to battle severe emotional distress. Megan said:
“There was a time that I genuinely didn’t care if I lived or died. I felt like no way I mattered. No way I should even be living. I don’t want to be here. I’m tired of waking up. I just wanted to die. I was so tired of being alive.”
When asked how’s recovering, Megan said she was having an “OK” day. Although hard to do, she was glad she got to testify and share her story in hopes that something good will come from it. She added, “I’m not going to kill myself, because I’m not going to give them what they’re looking for.” She continued to reveal how she managed to empower herself again after all she’s been through. Now, she only hopes that by telling her story, she “can inspire other women to want to tell their truth.”
