As People We Meet on Vacation makes the journey from the page to the screen, readers may notice some differences in the 2021 romantic comedy book’s feature adaptation.
Author Emily Henry recently teased how the Yulin Kuang-written, Brett Haley-directed rom-com, which premieres Jan. 9 on Netflix, departs from her book about the deep 10-year friendship between Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth) that blossoms into something more during their annual vacation.
“There are a couple of differences between the book and the movie that I’m really excited for the readers to see,” she told Netflix in an interview. “We’ve moved a lot of the book from Palm Springs to Barcelona, so there’s some fun new set dressing that they haven’t already experienced. But more than that, I think it’s these added scenes that were used to do, like a truncated version of stuff that happens in the book.”
Henry added, “So that means we get new dialog between Poppy and Alex, new moments, new jokes, new beats of affection. And it’s kind of just like we get extra pieces of them and I really think that the readers are gonna just like eat that up.”
Deadline exclusively reported the announcement of the People We Meet on Vacation film in development in late 2022, with cast boarding the production nearly two years later in August 2024.
The movie also stars Sarah Catherine Hook, Jameela Jamil, Lucien Laviscount, Lukas Gage, Molly Shannon, Alan Ruck, Miles Heizer, Tommy Do and Alice Lee.
