Both Wicked and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, have been incredibly successful, and the composer of the original Broadway play has recently teased some potential spin-offs.
What did Stephen Schwartz say about a possible Wicked spin-off?
Speaking to Variety in a recent interview, Stephen Schwartz — who wrote the music and lyrics for the original musical — was asked about the potential for sequels and other entries in the franchise. Schwartz had to play it coy, as he didn’t know what he was “allowed” to say. However, he did say that there will be “other visits to Oz” coming, and that he may already be working on one.
“I think that there will… there is… I don’t know. I’m trying to think what I’m allowed to say,” said Schwartz. “But let me just say, I think that a spinoff is not out of the question. Let me put it that way. Oz is a very rich territory. There are a lot of stories there, and possible stories. L. Frank Baum wrote many other odd stories besides that first book. So I think there may be some other visits to Oz in the future, and I might even be participating in one of them.”
So far, Wicked: For Good has grossed over $250 million worldwide at the global box office and will likely continue to earn more across its run. Its predecessor, 2024’s Wicked, was also a massive success, having earned over $750 million worldwide.
Talks of more Wicked movies have already begun as well, although it’s unclear whether or not any future projects would involve either Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo, who played Galinda and Elphaba in the two films, respectively.
