Netflix announced its acquisition of Warner Bros. for a total enterprise value of approximately $82.7 billion. What changes can consumers expect once the transaction is complete?

Last night, Netflix reportedly won the bidding war for Warner Bros. Hours later, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the agreement. Under the deal, Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO.

The transaction is subject to regulatory conditions and is not expected to close until the separation of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Networks division, Discovery Global, becomes a new publicly traded company. This is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.

What changes will occur after Warner Bros. is sold to Netflix?

Netflix has already announced plans to integrate Warner Bros. in a press release. The biggest question surrounding this deal revolves around theatrical windows. Warner Bros. releases its movies in theaters, while Netflix puts its movies directly on streaming, with only a handful of prestige releases receiving small theatrical windows. In the near future, Netflix “expects” to maintain Warner Bros.’ current operations and keep theatrical releases for films.

Earlier this morning, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos spoke to investors and the press on a conference call. Sarandos discussed theatrical windows and how they will soon “evolve,” meaning consumers can expect them to shrink.

“I wouldn’t look at this as a change in approach for Netflix movies or for Warner movies,” Sarandos said via Variety. “I think, over time, the windows will evolve to be much more consumer-friendly, to be able to meet the audience where they are quicker … I’d say right now, you should count on everything that is planned on going to the theater through Warner Bros. will continue to go to the theaters through Warner Bros….”

Netflix will soon gain access to the Warner Bros. film vault, as well as the HBO and HBO Max television libraries. DC, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and more popular Warner Bros. and HBO properties will be available to Netflix subscribers.

According to Netflix, this acquisition will also strengthen the entertainment industry by creating more jobs, providing more opportunities for the creative community, and adding more value for shareholders.

Discovery. “For more than a century, Warner Bros. has thrilled audiences, captured the world’s attention, and shaped our culture. By coming together with Netflix, we will ensure people everywhere will continue to enjoy the world’s most resonant stories for generations to come.”
