Following the tragic murder of Biggie Smalls in March 1997, Sean Combs planned a massive send-off fit for a king. In 50 Cent‘s new Netflix documentary, ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning,’ it was said that after Diddy learned of the steep cost to lay his artist to rest, he allegedly decided to charge the entire cost of the funeral back to Biggie’s estate.
The shocking claim came from Diddy’s Bad Boy Records co-founder, Kirk Burrowes. He claimed that Diddy pretended to personally pay for the extravagant funeral, which included a procession around the 24-year-old rapper’s childhood neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn.
In the documentary, Burrowes said:
“He was gonna make the funeral be a recoupable charge to Biggie in death. Sean, doing a big show looks good on him. But he’s not gonna tell the world that Biggie was gonna pay for it.”
On March 9, 1997, Biggie, born Christopher Wallace, was gunned down in Los Angeles. The tragic murder happened just six months after his West Coast friend-turned-rival Tupac Shakur was similarly shot to death in Las Vegas.
On March 18, 1997, the Brooklyn rapper’s family, friends, and fans laid hm to rest. Thousands of fans packed the streets to pay their respects as a hearse with his casket rode through the streets of his borough. His star-studded funeral took place at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel on the Upper East Side.
The venue sat the rapper’s entire personal family and Bad Boy Records family, including his wife, Faith Evans, his musical group Junior M.A.F.I.A., plus more.

Kirk Burrowes Alleges Diddy Stole Rolling Stone Cover From The Notorious B.I.G. After Death And Posthumously Changed Bad Boy Contract Terms
Burrowes continued to claim in the documentary that Diddy allegedly attempted to change a few terms in Biggie’s recording contract posthumously. He said:
“Sean wanted me to change the agreement to more favorable terms for Bad Boy, and [Wallace’s] family and mother would not know. And since [Wallace] had signed the agreement, [Combs] wanted those changes to come from out of the center of the agreement and have those pages replaced with the other terms. I said, ‘That’s not right. I’m not doing it.’”
Burrowes claimed that after refusing, Diddy fired him a few months later. He continued to claim that Diddy took Biggie’s Rolling Stone cover opportunity in 1997. Burrowes said after heavily pushing to get the cover for B.I.G., he passed and Diddy advocated to replace his artist with himself. Burrowes previously told Rolling Stone:
“I was telling Sean, ‘Let’s make it Biggie. You still have a chance [for a cover in the future]. He’s like ‘No, he’s dead. I’m putting out [Combs’ debut album, No Way Out] in July. I need to be on the cover of Rolling Stone.”

Notorious B.I.G. Estate Manager Denies New Documentary Claim That Diddy Used Late Rapper’s Money To Pay For Own Funeral: ‘Bad Boy And Diddy Paid For Everything’
Following the claims about Diddy making B.I.G. posthumously pay for his own funeral, his estate manager has denied everything. According to The Breakfast Club‘s Loren LoRosa, Biggie’s estate manager, Wayne Barrow, called the docuseries’ portrayal “inaccurate.” Barrow addressed the funeral claims and also claims about Biggie and Diddy battling over contract renegotiations before his death.
LoRosa not only shared Barrow’s statement on air, but took to X and wrote:
“I spoke with Wayne Barrow, who worked with Biggie’s mom Ms. Wallace in managing Biggie’s estate. He was also a really close friend of Biggie’s. On the 50 Cent x Diddy Netflix doc, he made it clear he wanted to speak on behalf of Ms. Voletta Wallace, not the estate. He says:
The allegations from the doc, ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning,’ claiming Diddy/ Bad Boy used Biggie’s money to pay for his own funeral, Wayne alleges are false.
Wayne Barrow says he officiated the funeral and was also planning it along with Kirk Burrowes (featured in the doc, who made the original claim) and the Bad Boy staff.
Wayne Barrow says Bad boy/ Diddy paid for everything and at no point was there any indication in any royalty statement of Biggies that reflected any funeral cost.
Wayne says him and Ms. Wallace reviewed every royalty statement that came together up until the day she passed .. funeral expenses never came up.
Wayne also alleges there weren’t Biggie & Diddy contract beefs at the time of Biggie’s passing. ‘Life After Death‘ was recouped.
Wayne Barrow says he can’t speak much on the the Rolling Stone Biggie x Puff cover story drama from the Netflix doc. But, he can say there was never a Rolling Stone Cover presented to Biggie’s team that he’s aware of.”
