Was James Gunn wrong about Superman? David Corenswet reveals the one note he simply refused during production on the DC Universe film.
There’s been a surprising amount of discourse revolving around Superman‘s production. Much of it stems from a viral clip showing an argument that David Corenswet and James Gunn had about the monologue at the end of the DC Universe film. While the moment itself was not anything too shocking, it did open the door to the fascinating world of movie production.
However, it seems as though not every argument went the same way that fans saw in that one clip. During a recent appearance on Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series, David Corenswet that he actually refused to take on key note from James Gunn. That note? Superman’s smile when he’s carrying Lois Lane into the sky.
“James, when I was doing that chuckle when she says, ‘I love you too,’ he came up to me and said, ‘It’s not working. It needs to be solemn.’ I was like, ‘No! The whole point is, ‘I f**king know that you love me.’ Credit to James. He was right on 90% of everything, but on that one, he saw that chuckle was a very truthful thing.”
David Corenswet’s ‘Impossible’ Superman Role
Given Superman is the talk of the town, that was far from the only time the DC Universe blockbuster was discussed in the interview. At one point, David Corenswet reflects on getting that call from James Gunn. The actor admits that he had no clue what it was about, and that actually landing the role felt like something that was impossible.
“Well, when I got the audition, I was standing on a ladder changing a light fixture. My agent said, ‘We think you know what this is about.’ I said, ‘Is it Top Gun 3? What am I waiting for?’ I really was not expecting it, although I think other people thought that I should be expecting it. Just statistically speaking, it feels completely impossible.”
Of course, the impossible was very much possible. David Corenswet is now one of the faces of the DC Universe, likely set to play Superman for years to come. He’s already set to reprise his role in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, which is set to debut in 2027. However, it’s more likely than not he’ll make some form of appearance next year too.
