UPDATE — 12/11/25, 9:05 a.m. ET: Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was taken into police custody for an alleged assault shortly before news of his firing was announced.
Moore, 39, was detained by authorities just minutes before the university announced his termination on Wednesday, December 10, according to a police press release.
The Pittsfield Police Department responded to an address on the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road at 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault,” the department stated.
A suspect in the case was taken into custody, who a source told the Detroit News was Moore.
Moore’s firing was announced by the University of Michigan at 4:43 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” the press release said.
According to online court records, Moore was booked at the Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m.
“At this time, the investigation is ongoing,” the Pittsfield Police Department said. “Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as possible.”
Details on the specific charges against Moore are unknown at this time.
Moore has just completed his second season as Michigan’s head coach, taking over for Jim Harbaugh who left to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers after winning a national championship in January 2024.
The university announced that Biff Poggi will take over as interim head coach as Michigan prepares to play the University of Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando on New Year’s Eve.
“We are excited to take part in the 80th Citrus Bowl, a game that traditionally features some of the most storied programs in college football,” Moore said when the bowl matchup was announced on Sunday, December 7. “Our team is eager for the challenge of competing against Texas, and it is a great honor to represent the Big Ten on this stage. We look forward to the trip to Orlando and the opportunity to close out our season against a talented Longhorn squad led by Coach Steve Sarkisian.”
Moore had three years left on his contract, which was set to pay him more than $6 million per year. The university fired Moore “for cause.”

Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was detained by police after being fired for an “inappropriate” relationship with a staff member.
Moore, 39, was involved in an incident on Wednesday, December 10, that required police attention, the Saline, Michigan, chief of police confirmed to The Detroit News.
Saline borders Ann Arbor, the home of the University of Michigan.
According to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel, the City of Saline Police Department “assisted in locating and detaining” Moore.
Moore was then turned over to the Pittsfield Police Department “for investigation into potential charges,” per a statement.
Just hours earlier, the University of Michigan announced Moore had been fired after an investigation uncovered he had “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement.
At this point, it is unclear if Moore being taken into custody is directly related to his termination.
