As we previously shared, two people and nine others were left critically injured after a shooting at Providence, Rhode Island’s Brown University. At the time of the initial reports, the suspect was still at large, which he currently remains as of Monday (December 15).
During a press conference Saturday evening, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the victim count. Smiley said one person was in stable condition, 6 in critical, but stable condition, one more stabilized, and another stable with non-life-threatening injuries (stemming from bullet fragments). Smiley confirmed all victims as students of Brown University.

Following the incident, President Donald Trump confirmed he was briefed on the matter. On Truth Social, he wrote:
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Trump then updated his report to reflect Brown University’s own update of them revoking its initial statement about the shooter. The President updated, “The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — the suspect is NOT in custody.” Trump spoke again with the press as he arrived at the White House on Marine One. He reiterated that he’d been briefed on the shooting. He said:
“I’ve been fully briefed on the Brown University situation. What a terrible thing it is, and all we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt. It’s a shame. It’s a shame. Just pray. Thank you very much.”

Harrowing Video Shows Brown University Students Hiding In Classroom Amid Shooting; $50K Reward Offered As Manhunt Continues For Gunman
Following the incident, law enforcement officials revealed they had a person of interest in custody. Police identified the person as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson. However, police ultimately released the detained suspect, stating their gunman was still on the run.
Since then, a video has gone viral showing students cowering in fear as an active gunman stormed their campus, taking lives. In the video, filmed by a student, shows them and others sheltering-in-place on the campus. The video begins with the students crouched down on the floor in between stacks of an apparent library. A loud banging can be heard from outside.
Shortly after, police storm the room to rescue the students. The police tell the students to raise their hands up and listen to everything they’re told. After checking to see if anyone was hurt, police tell the students to grab their belongings from the other side of the room and quickly exit the building with law enforcement as the shooter remained at large.
Elsewhere, police have since shared new surveillance videos of the suspect, still at large. Law enforcement have also offered a $50,000 reward as the manhunt continues for the uncaptured Brown University shooter.
