What did Mark Hamill say about a return as Luke Skywalker?

Speaking to CBS Mornings in a recent interview, Hamill was asked about the possibility of returning. The Luke Skywalker actor noted that he believes his character’s time in the franchise is done after his brief roles in the sequel trilogy, which included two cameos and a larger role in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“I think I’ve had my time. Especially in…the middle one, I’m only in cameos in [Episode 7] and [Episode 9]. The only time he was part of the narrative was in Episode 8, and they wrapped up my story. I think it’s funny that people miss the irony that he died from an overdose of the Force,” said Hamill.

Hamill went on to joke that he didn’t even know that was possible, and then mentioned that despite it all, he is content not coming back, as he’d prefer a nice exit to something like that.

“I mean, who knew that was even a thing? Don’t you think if there was even a marginal chance that using the Force could be lethal, Obi-Wan would’ve said ‘Use the Force in moderation, Luke?’ Or Yoda would’ve said ‘Overdo Force projection, you must not?’ Nobody warned me! But obviously, they concluded his story, he died.

“And I thought…in fact, not only did I think that was the right time to leave that franchise, I thought that’s a nice exit. Because as much as you enjoy a good entrance, you want to dignify a good exit,” Hamill said.

Hamill’s issues with The Last Jedi have been well documented, with the star not-so-subtly noting that he wasn’t fully happy about what happened to Skywalker in the film. Despite that, and with rumors floating that Disney is planning on bringing back Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker, it seems like Hamill is content away from the world of Star Wars now.
