MGM+ is heading to the American frontier. The network has officially greenlit an eight-episode drama series based on The Magnificent Seven, bringing the iconic Western back to life for television with a fresh take that digs deeper into its characters and moral conflicts.

This new adaptation comes from Tim Kring, the creator behind Heroes and Touch, who will serve as writer and executive producer. He’s joined by executive producers Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman.

Set in the 1880s, the story centers on a peaceful Quaker village that’s wiped out by gunmen working for a ruthless land baron. In desperation, the survivors turn to a group of mercenaries for protection.

As these hired guns embed themselves in the community, the series leans hard into the central conflict at the heart of The Magnificent Seven: whether violence can ever be justified when defending people whose faith rejects it entirely.

Each episode will peel back the layers of the Seven, exploring their pasts, their motivations, and what they stand to lose by taking on this dangerous mission.

The project also closes the door on a previously announced version of the series. True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, who co-wrote the 2016 film remake, had been developing a The Magnificent Seven TV adaptation at Amazon. That version is no longer moving forward, and Pizzolatto isn’t involved in the MGM+ series.

The original 1960 film, directed by John Sturges and starring Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, and Steve McQueen, remains one of the most beloved Westerns ever made. It’s one of my favorites and its spawned multiple sequels, a remake, and even a previous TV series that ran from 1998 to 2000. This new take aims to honor that legacy while expanding the story.

Michael Wright, head of MGM+, summed up the network’s confidence in the project, saying, “Tim Kring is a master storyteller. Tim, Donald De Line, Larry Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman have crafted a series that delivers the energy of a classic Western, honors the legacy of the original film, and reasserts its timeless themes of the power of unity against oppression and flawed heroes finding redemption by helping those who can’t help themselves.”

With Westerns steadily finding new life on TV and MGM+ already proving it can handle the genre, The Magnificent Seven feels like a great and exciting swing. If the series sticks the landing, this could be a cool evolution of a classic that still has plenty left to say.

Production is scheduled to kick off in June 2026, giving the creative team time to shape what MGM+ is positioning as a prestige Western series.
