Could Kate Hudson have been the perfect Mary Jane? The iconic actress gives her thoughts on passing on the original Spider-Man trilogy.
To many, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man saga is perfection. The films are a perfect encapsulation of the early 2000s, and many can’t imagine a single aspect changing. However, every film goes through hundreds of changes before arriving at the big screen. Perhaps the most famous example of this is major names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Freddie Prinze Jr. being up for the role of Spider-Man before Tobey Maguire.
However, it seems Spider-Man’s paramour also could’ve had a different face. On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Kate Hudson was asked about turning down the role of Mary Jane Watson in the trilogy. The Almost Famous and Knives Out actress confirmed that she did pass on the part, but it’s not usually a topic she likes to dwell on.
“When people say these things, it doesn’t feel good to talk about it, because the people who are in the movie are the right people, right? And your circumstances in life happen the way they happen. But yes, I did.”
Spider-Man ‘Would Have Been Fun’
Continuing on about turning down the role of Mary Jane Watson, Kate Hudson does admit that it would have been fun appearing in a project like Spider-Man. However, the projects that she was able to take on due to passing on the film did have a large impact on her life, so she remains grateful for both the opportunities she took and the ones she was given.
“It’s one of those things where I look back like, ‘That would have been nice to be in a Spider-Man” movie. But at the same time, I did a movie called Four Feathers. I got to meet Heath Ledger who became a very good friend and I got an experience that I would have never had.”
“A part of me is like, ‘Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.’ And so, I’m grateful for it. But I do look at it and I’m like, ‘Aw, it would have been fun to be her.’”
Choosing not to be a part of Spider-Man didn’t exactly hurt Kate Hudson’s career. In the years since, the actress has played a role in many iconic movies, such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Rock the Kasbah. She’s also set to appear alongside another superhero alum, Hugh Jackman, with their project Sing Song Blue.
