Tylor Chase’s dad has opened up about the real reason his son is suffering homelessness, revealing that the former child star has been battling mental health issues and drug addiction.

Chase has made headlines recently after he was seen pillaging dirt behind a 7-Eleven store near Riverside, California, looking unkempt and tattered.

Reports suggest Tylor Chase has refused shelter from authorities, as well as help for his mental health and substance addiction issues.

Chase sparked concerns earlier this week when he was seen in a viral video looking disheveled.

Having risen to fame for his role as Martin Qwerly in Nickelodeon’s “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” worried fans questioned why he was in such a state, with many offering to help improve his condition.

On Tuesday, his father, Joseph Mendez Jr., told the Daily Mail that his family has been going through the ordeal for well over a decade.

Mendez noted that Chase, whose legal name is Tylor Kurtis Mendez, is a “wonderful person” when he’s himself, but his drug addiction problems seem to have left him a shadow of himself.

“For over a decade, the family has sought treatment options for Tylor, including support for substance use as well as mental health care,” he said. “In addition to addiction, Tylor has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which require consistent medical treatment.”

The Georgia-based realtor went further to add that the family has done all they could to help Chase, including signing him up for rehab around 2021, but he always seemed to relapse.

“Approximately four years ago, he received treatment in Georgia, and while there was progress for a time, he later chose to discontinue medication and resumed substance use,” he said.

Mendez continued, “More recently, Tylor returned to California to be with his mother in hopes of stabilizing his situation; however, despite continued support, he has refused ongoing treatment and assistance.”

While his father stays far away in Georgia, Chase seemingly maintains close contact with his mom, Paula Moisio, who lives nearby.

Chase seemingly confirmed his substance abuse issues when he told the Daily Mail that he “likes to vape” and takes “Prozac, Adderall, Sudafed, Wellbutrin, or also Zoloft.”

According to the former actor, he received these drugs from a psychiatrist despite not having any serious mental health conditions.

“I’m not really active homeless at this time, I’m thinking that I would like to go see my dad, relatively shortly, in the state of Georgia,” he said.

Chase added, “I have the whole setup to stay out there, a room out there hopefully […] Probably a housing assistance program in Georgia most likely.”

The Former Child Star Continues To Decline Help From Law Enforcement

Riverside police have claimed that Chase has refused any form of intervention to help his living condition. Reports suggest the department’s outreach division offered him shelter, as well as treatment for his drug and alcohol problems, but he allegedly refused the offer.

He has also racked up a few run-ins with the law, as Riverside court records show he has 12 criminal cases to his name since August 2023, 8 of which came this year. He was recently arrested for shoplifting and being under the influence of a controlled substance, although cops say he’s not wanted for any crimes.

“During all of our interactions, he has been cordial and cooperative with our officers,” Riverside Police Department Public Information Officer Ryan Railsback told the Daily Mail earlier this week.

“We do not know how long he has been experiencing homelessness,” he continued, adding that the department’s Public Safety Engagement Team “contacts him at least once a week and consistently offers a variety of resources, including assistance with temporary shelter options.”

Tylor Chase’s Colleagues Have Risen To The Occasion

Chase’s former co-stars and colleagues have come to his rescue. This week, he was seen hanging out with his former co-star Daniel Curtis Lee, who checked him into a motel to get him off the streets. They were all smiles as they hugged in their emotional reunion.

Also, former Disney actor Shaun Weiss took to Instagram on Monday and promised to help arrange rehab treatments for Chase.

Weiss can relate to Chase’s condition, as a 2020 video showed him in a declined state due to his substance abuse issues before he sought professional help.

“I reached out to some friends of mine, and we have a bed for him at a detox, and we have a place for him to go and get long-term treatment thanks to my buddy Mike Jordan at 1111 Recovery,” he said.

“His family has been trying for many years to get him the support he needs, but ultimately, he must be willing to accept help,” he said. “Tylor is deeply loved by his family and friends, who remain hopeful and are praying that he will accept the help being offered. Their focus continues to be on his safety, health, and well-being.”

Chase’s father, Mendez, also revealed that he has spoken to Weiss and they’re “working together in an effort to help Tylor.”
