According to a press release from the Zion Police Department, authorities arrested 43-year-old McCarty-Wroten on Tuesday (December 23). Police accused her of having involvement in a November 3 traffic accident that killed 59-year-old Darren Lucas.
Police say Lucas was walking home from his shift at a grocery store in Zion, Illinois. The city, with about 25,000 citizens, sits on the shores of Lake Michigan, just south of the Wisconsin border. Police said Lucas was walking to catch the bus home from work when he was fatally struck.

When police spoke with McCarty-Wroten, she told investigators that she believed she had a green light. However, when police reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses, they saw the light was red when she entered the intersection.
McCarty-Wroten remained at the scene after the incident and cooperated with law enforcement. However, they said she declined to allow investigators to search her cellphone. Police also said an 8-year-old child was in the vehicle with the TikToker at the time of the incident. Both were checked for injuries and declined medical assistance.
Law enforcement officials said “In the days following the crash, numerous members of the public reached out to Zion Investigators to inform them of a TikTok video that allegedly showed Ms. McCarty-Wroten live-streaming herself driving at the time of the crash.”

The video confirmed that the TikToker was livestreaming while driving and had an 8-year-old in the car with her. The Lake County State Attorney’s Office issued a warrant and on December 23, police arrested the TikToker on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated use of an electronic communication device. McCarty-Wroten is being held without bond.
Police also confirmed that the TikToker later surrendered her phone through her attorney. Investigators were then able to use forensic analysis to confirm that the video had been recorded at the date and time of the crash. In the viral video of the crash, the user, with the handle “Tea_Tyme_3,” can be heard repeatedly stating, “F**k, f**k, f**k, I just hit somebody.”
