Is Steve Rogers back as Captain America? A new report about Avengers: Doomsday reveals the truth about Chris Evans’ role in the upcoming superhero film.
One of the most controversial pieces of news to come out of Avengers: Doomsday was the reveal that Chris Evans would be officially making his return to the MCU as Steve Rogers. This comes after a half-decade of absence from the character (albeit, not from the world of superheroes), with the last fans saw of him being giving up the mantle of Captain America to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.
This is what has many fans worried. The MCU has been sparse with its use of Anthony Mackie as Captain America. Bringing Chris Evans back as the hero so soon after Avengers: Doomsday could be seen as an admission of defeat. It’s also likely that Steve Rogers will play a major role in the film, taking away valuable screentime that could have been Sam Wilson’s “big break” on the silver screen.
Is Steve Rogers Still Captain America?
However, it seems as though fans’ worries about Captain America may be a tad overblown. A rumor from Alex Perez at The Cosmic Circus confirms that Sam Wilson WILL remain the only Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. While Chris Evans will appear in the film (and will likely play a substantial role), his character will simply remain as Steve Rogers.
While a relief for those worried that Marvel was already preparing to ditch Anthony Mackie as Captain America, it doesn’t solve all the problems they have with Avengers: Doomsday. Much of the Multiverse Saga, in the eyes of the audience, has been perceived as fearful, as it involves moving beyond already established actors and stories. Bringing back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, even for a good reason, just reinforces his idea.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
