While the Olympian has undoubtedly amassed a fortune thanks to her historic $8 million contract and other seven-figure paydays per fight, social media users were unimpressed by the 30-year-old’s flashy demeanor. Claressa Shields Slammed By Social Media Users For The Athlete’s Spending Habits

Shields appeared conscious of the flex in her latest post, captioning it, “Tea! I’m tea, b-tch. Period! That’s the post!”
However, the reception wasn’t what she likely anticipated.
“Showing receipts was so unnecessary and weird,” a user wrote, while another said, “Millionaires don’t post the receipts, boo, we believe you!” A third user also criticized Shields, calling her behavior “so young acting,” while a fourth questioned where her PR team was at.

The popular Instagram blog, The Shade Room, also reposted Shields’ carousel, igniting further criticism from users.
“D-mn near 30K on bags but your stylist couldn’t blend your leave out is crazy,” someone wrote, to which another replied, “No amount of money can uncorny a person.”

Shields Faced More Criticism This Year After Criticizing Angel Reese
Earlier this year, Shields sparked controversy after voicing her frustration with BET over losing this year’s Sportswoman of the Year award to WNBA superstar Angel Reese. “Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the [BET Awards],” she wrote on X, “but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees. I just thought accolades mattered.”
Users rushed to Reese’s defense, citing the baller’s WNBA records and first professional championship win with ROSE BC of Unrivaled Basketball. “This screams loser,” someone posted. “You weren’t even 2nd, 3rd, 4th OR 5th runner up. YOU wouldn’t have won, [and] there’s ladies on the nominee list that have more accolades than you.”
Shields fired back at her detractors, clarifying that she respects Reese. “As for my earlier comments, I am allowed to express my feelings. I was shocked I didn’t win. … It’s ok to be a competitor,” she said.

I have bad days; I haven’t been playing well at all,” she said in June 2025. “I take accountability. I come in every day and try and be better than the last. I know my teammates trust me; I know they have my back.”
