Ciara is opening up about a time she’s felt “overlooked” and slighted, admitting she felt snubbed by the Grammys with her 2013 single “Body Party,” declaring it should’ve at least been nominated because she “literally checked off every box.”

Ciara has earned five Grammy nominations and scored one award. In 2006, she won “Best Short Form Music Video” for her 2005 hit “Lose Control,” featuring Missy Elliott and the late Fatman Scoop. Ciara’s last Grammy nod was for her and Justin Timberlake‘s 2009 collaboration, ‘Love Sex Magic.” The song, which was up for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals,” lost to Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat‘s “Lucky.”
While appearing on the December 28 episode of ‘The Zeze Millz Show,’ Ciara, who released her eighth album, ‘CICi,’ in August, talked about her Grammy snubs. She said:
“Are there moments when you feel like somebody overlooked you? I was just talking to someone the other day — this is a conversation I will not go too heavy on it — but I was talking about the Grammys situation. I literally had a song that was R&B that went Number One on the charts, right? And this song was prominent in Urban Pop Culture. I’m talking about “Body Party,” okay? It was a really big record.
That was — that could be a great example where you’re like, ‘Okay, I literally checked off every box.’ You know, that’s dream goals, right? And it’s a blessing when you get to check off all the boxes on a record release. In that moment, say you don’t get a Grammy nomination — not even a nomination — you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’ Like, help me understand what more do I have to do?
So, you have those natural momentS where things like that happen. What I was saying back to that is: I never want to feel like the validation of my success is within any tool, anything physical or material. It’s like you have to have like your own success meter in your mind. And as long as I’m doing what I love, it’s making me happy, and I have a strong connection to my fans, [that] means the world to me. I have a strong love for this thing. The moment I lose the love for this is the moment that I”ll stop doing it. But, I just decided I don’t want to put too much weight or merit on things that I can’t control.”

Ciara Reveals “Body Party” Wasn’t Eligible For Any Grammy Award Nominations
During the interview, host Zeze Millz told the R&B singer how the song was one of her favorites. She explained, “Because you sampled Ghost Town DJs.” Reportedly, this is what made the song ineligible for a Grammy nomination.
In December 2013, Ciara took to Instagram to address the reason why the song never got a Grammy nod. She shared that because she sampled Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo,” the song lost its eligibility. The Recording Academy would eventually lift the sample restriction. Before that, Ciara said:
“Body Party Going number 1 this year was a blessing within itself, and for that I am thankful! Unfortunately it couldn’t be eligible because of the -My Boo- sample in it. I discovered this before the songs allowed for nominations were set… However this year has been incredible considering the journey a few years prior, and it is JUST the beginning:) So, I’za Happy Happy Girl, and Thankful to have a Grammy already!!:) Let’s keep all this good stuff going! Love CC! Xx!”
