The Magnolias are not in Serenity anymore. Season 5 of Netflix‘s small-town romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias will debut June 11, sixteen months after the release of Season 4.
Along with the premiere date announcement, the streamer released a first-look image from the new season. It features the titular Magnolias, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley), in New York’s Central Park.
The big city location will not come as a surprise to Sweet Magnolias fans after the Season 4 finale’s multiple cliffhangers included Maddie getting a publishing job in New York.
The photo confirms what series showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson told Deadline at the time, that the physical separation won’t break the Magnolias’ bond.
“Can anything end the Magnolias?! Our ladies have seen each other through bigger challenges than physical distance,” she said. “When you love someone, you want what’s best for them and want to help them reach that goal. True friends celebrate each other in times of victory, embolden each other to seize their passion, and then link arms to figure out logistics.”
Billed by Netflix as “comfort drama,” Sweet Magnolias, based on the book series by Sherryl Woods, follows lifelong best friends Maddie (Swisher), Dana Sue (Elliott), and Helen (Headley) as they juggle relationships, family, and careers in the charming small town of Serenity, SC.
