Two people were killed and at least six others were injured after a mass shooting occurred outside a church in Salt Lake City on Wednesday evening during a funeral reception.
According to Salt Lake Tribune, the shooting took place at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house. Authorities confirmed that three of the injured victims remain in critical condition. Emergency responders were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m., after reports of gunfire erupted in the church’s parking lot.
Authorities Say Altercation Preceded the Shooting
Law enforcement officials said the shooting stemmed from an altercation in the parking lot outside the church. Investigators have not yet released details about what led to the confrontation or how many people may have been involved. At this time, authorities say the incident remains under active investigation.
Officials also confirmed that no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made as of the latest update.
Church Issues Statement After Violence at Sacred Space
Following the tragedy, the Church released a statement expressing condolences and concern.
“We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind,” the statement read.
