A woman is facing multiple neglect-related charges after authorities discovered more than 200 rats — both dead and alive — inside her Long Island home, where her 3-year-old grandson had reportedly been living for weeks.
The suspect, Lori Curley, was charged after investigators determined that the child had been exposed to extreme unsanitary conditions, including rodent infestation, urine, feces, and decay. Officials described the home as overwhelmingly foul, with a strong odor of waste and decomposition throughout the Rocky Point residence.
Bodycam Footage Shows Child Living in Unsanitary Conditions
According to authorities, body camera footage recorded in December showed the toddler wearing only a diaper as he walked through the home surrounded by filth. Investigators said the child had lived in the residence for several weeks, raising serious concerns about his health and safety.
Neighbors Raised Concerns About Rat Infestation
According to News 12, neighbors were aware of the rat problem before authorities intervened.
One neighbor told the outlet that she considered calling an exterminator herself because of the number of rats seen roaming freely around the property.
Another neighbor said she felt sympathy for Curley, suggesting that the situation may have escalated beyond her control.
Video footage shared by News 12 showed rats moving across Curley’s front porch, reinforcing concerns about the severity of the infestation.
