Jessica Simpson is leaning into her roots — no matter how fishy.
“I’m back on set with Chicken of the Sea to record their jingle,” Simpson, 45, said in a Wednesday, January 14, social media video, showcasinging the singer back in the recording studio.
Simpson subsequently belted the tuna brand’s iconic jingle, “Ask any mermaid you happen to see, what’s the best chicken?”
Simpson, however, quickly realized that she didn’t have the lyrics correct.
“Wait, that’s not right,” she quipped. “I’m too hungry for this. Can we take a break? … Chicken of the Sea’s Portable Packets keep me going on busy days.”
After indulging in the snack, Simpson gave the jingle a second shot.
“Ask any mermaid you happen to see, what’s the best tuna?” she crooned. “Chicken of the Sea!”
According to Simpson, it was “a true honor” to reimagine the brand’s theme tune.
“Working with Chicken of the Sea again to launch a new version of their iconic jingle was a true honor,” Simpson told People on Wednesday. “I have been a fan of this brand for over 25 years, and I love their portable tuna packets (including their newest packet with Frank’s RedHot!) — it’s such a healthy, easy and yummy snack to grab on the go.”
Simpson famously questioned whether Chicken of the Sea was actually made from chicken or tuna in a 2003 episode of her and ex-husband Nick Lachey’s Newlyweds docuseries.
“Is this chicken what I have, or is this fish? I know it’s tuna, but it says chicken by the sea. Is that stupid?” Simpson asked Lachey at the time. “Why is it called chicken by the sea or in the sea?”
Lachey, now 52, looked at Simpson in disbelief throughout the now-viral exchange.
“You act like you’ve never had tuna before,” he replied. “Chicken of the Sea is the brand. You know, because a lot of people eat tuna, a lot of people eat chicken, so it’s like the chicken of the sea.”
Simpson subsequently stated that she merely read the label “wrong.”
Simpson and Lachey were married from 2002 to 2006, chronicling their short-lived union on Newlyweds. The show came to an end in 2005, one year before the pair’s divorce.
Two decades later, Simpson joined forces with Chicken of the Sea for humorous ad campaigns in both 2024 and 2026.
“I’m all about nostalgia. That moment was a very real conversation that just became bigger than me,” Simpson told People on Tuesday, January 13. “I’m a very literal person, so I think of things in a very literal way, and I literally had a question that went viral and still goes viral.”
Nick has since moved on with his wife, Vanessa Lachey, with whom he shares three children. Simpson is also a mom of three, sharing Maxwell, Ace and Birdie with her estranged husband, Eric Johnson. Simpson and Johnson, 46, separated in January 2025 but have remained committed to coparenting.
“They are not getting back together or reconciling,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in September 2025 after Johnson joined Jessica at her sister Ashlee Simpson Ross’ concert in Las Vegas. “It was a family event, and Eric was being supportive. He wanted to support Ashlee.”
