A man is currently on the run after authorities in Albany County, New York, reportedly discovered his court-ordered GPS ankle monitor attached to a dog instead of his ankle.
According to local outlet WNYT, the unusual discovery was made last Tuesday in the town of Nassau after a woman found a dog roaming alone in the area. Concerned for the animal’s safety, she took the dog to a nearby veterinary clinic. During the examination, staff noticed that the dog’s collar had what appeared to be a GPS ankle bracelet attached to it. Veterinary employees immediately contacted Schodack Police, who then coordinated with Albany County Probation to investigate the source of the monitoring device and who it belonged to.
Authorities Trace The Device Back To A Felony Weapons Case
Officials later confirmed that the ankle monitor belonged to Lamont Holmes, who had been charged with felony possession of a loaded weapon.
Holmes had previously been released from custody under court-ordered supervision, which required him to wear a GPS ankle bracelet as a condition of his release. Authorities say the device was removed without authorization and placed on the dog’s collar, violating the terms of his release.
Once the ankle monitor was identified and recovered, law enforcement began efforts to locate Holmes. Officials say his whereabouts are currently unknown.
Bench Warrant Issued As Investigation Continues
Following the removal of the ankle monitor, a bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of the individual responsible for tampering with the court-ordered monitoring device. Authorities have not confirmed whether Holmes personally removed the device or if another individual assisted.
At this time, Albany County Probation and local law enforcement agencies are continuing their search. No additional charges have been publicly announced, and officials have not released further details about the investigation.
The dog involved in the incident was safely recovered and is no longer wearing the monitoring device.
