The God of Thunder is dialing things back.

After years of cosmic chaos and full-throttle comedy, Chris Hemsworth says Thor is stepping into heavier territory in Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor recently talked about the shift in tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, confirming what many fans picked up from the teaser: this isn’t the same carefree Avenger we saw last time.

When Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters, it felt like a jolt of lightning to the franchise. The character got a much-needed overhaul, trading stiff Shakespearean vibes for wild humor and neon-drenched cosmic adventure. Some fans felt it leaned hard into the jokes, but it revitalized Thor and gave Hemsworth room to stretch.

Then came Thor: Love and Thunder, which cranked the silliness even higher. The movie made money and found its audience, but a lot of longtime Marvel fans weren’t thrilled with how far the character drifted into slapstick territory. Hemsworth himself has admitted he played a part in pushing Thor too far in that direction.

Now, things are changing.

A fifth Thor movie is reportedly in early development at Marvel Studios, and filmmaker Taika Waititi isn’t attached this time. Before that solo outing even happens, though, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are steering the character into darker waters in Avengers: Doomsday.

The Thor teaser suggested a more grounded, intense version of the character, and Hemsworth confirmed that shift during an appearance on The View.

“Yeah, you get a taste from [the teaser]. That is a different tone than, I guess, what Love and Thunder was.”

That tonal pivot isn’t new territory for Hemsworth. One of the perks of sticking around the MCU for over a decade is the ability to remix the character.

“And what I loved about my time in the MCU, I was able to, every couple of films, change the tone of the character. And some people, they find it a bit disruptive, but for my own artistic journey and adventure, it’s been a great blessing to be able to do that.”

That creative freedom has led Thor from arrogant prince to broken warrior to cosmic goofball. But in Avengers: Doomsday, it sounds like he’s carrying something heavier.

“This film, you see from the trailer, he’s asking for help from his father upstairs. And there’s a lot of pressure, and I can’t say much at all. Every word I’m saying, that’s one too many. The other end of the phone call saying, ‘Stop, stop, stop,'”

The teaser hinted that Thor is trying to protect his daughter as the Multiverse edges toward collapse. If that’s the emotional core of the story, it raises the stakes in a big way.

For fans who felt Love and Thunder leaned too hard into the jokes, this reset might be exactly what the character needs. Thor works best when he balances power, pain, and the occasional smirk.

If the Russos are aiming to bring back the warrior who stood his ground in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, while keeping the growth he’s experienced, we could be looking at the most layered version of the Odinson yet.

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a pivotal chapter for the MCU, and it sounds like Thor will be right at the center of it, carrying more than just Stormbreaker on his shoulders.
