Venom is going back to his gorehound roots! A rumor suggests that the villain’s upcoming animated reboot will be rated R!

It was recently confirmed that the Venom franchise would be getting a reboot, just not the way that fans expect. Perhaps in accordance with not confusing fans when the symbiote is finally introduced into the MCU (so long as the rumor mill is correct about that), an animated movie based on the Lethal Production is confirmed to be in development.

The animated Venom reboot certainly has an interesting roster of talent behind it. Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are attached to helm the project. Tom Hardy is confirmed to be a producer on the film, though there’s no word on whether or not he’ll voice the titular character. While there’s currently no writer attached, Kelly Marcel, who wrote all three live-action Venom films, is also confirmed to be a producer.

The Lethal Protector Gets Rated R

Following this announcement, Hollywood insider DanielRPK revealed in a rumor that Sony Pictures was angling to have the project be rated R. This is shocking, not only given that prior Venom films have been PG-13, but because of how rare the R rating is for animated films – the tag usually reserved for overtly adult comedies. If this is true, the animated reboot may make history by being the most successful film of its kind at the box office.

This rumor also isn’t entirely unfounded by data. Violent animated films have succeeded at the box office, but they just haven’t come from the West. Movies like Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc show that American audiences have a hunger for animated movies that are rated R. The only question is whether or not Sony Pictures can pull this off with a Venom reboot of all properties.

A Venom animated movie is in development at Sony Pictures. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Venom series!
