After being upped to series regular for the forthcoming fourth season of The Diplomat, Bradley Whitford is teasing what’s next for his character on the Netflix political thriller drama.
While on the red carpet for the premiere of the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him, the Get Out alum previewed the arc for First Gentleman Todd Penn.
“Either my character doesn’t want to be there or the other characters don’t want my character to be there,” he told Deadline.
Co-star Allison Janney, who was also promoted for the upcoming season, portrays President Grace Penn, after being introduced in Season 2 as VP and becoming the POTUS in the final seconds of the season finale. The two of them recurred in Season 3, which traced the downfall of titular envoy Kate (Keri Russell) and Hal’s (Rufus Sewell) relationship after the former was passed up for the VP slot in favor of the latter. In the junior installment, Todd and Kate speculate about the new duo’s professional relationship and the depth of their betrayal.
In a previous interview, series creator Debora Cahn told Deadline of Season 4, which will bow sometime this year: “It’s going great. We’re in the middle of filming it and in the middle of writing it, and we’re at that point where it seems completely impossible that we will figure out how to land this plane. But that’s always how it feels at this point. So, yeah, now at least we were a couple seasons in, I’m at least starting to recognize that feeling and know that that’s probably a healthy part of the process.”
Reminders of Him, which bows in theaters this Friday, follows mother Kenna’s (Maika Monroe) attempt to reconnect with her young daughter after a grave mistake lands her in prison. Her reunion efforts are opposed by the local community (including the child’s grandparents, played by Whitford and Lauren Graham) save for a bar owner (Tyriq Withers). As the two grow closer, Kenna must confront her past in order to embark on her new romance and second chance.
