Law & Order – “Fate’s Cruel Joke” – Review: Accidents Happen

This genuinely was an absolutely exceptional episode, I don’t know how they manage to keep topping themselves each week but this was such an incredible watch.

Honestly for 90% of this episode I didn’t know whether I should be laughing or crying and if I was laughing was it okay to be. I think that is what made for such a great episode. There is definitely a contradiction in the characters’ feelings and that makes for the audience to have contradictory feelings too.

It was incredibly hilarious watching Aunt Sarah just lose her cool constantly, I will happily take more of that.

This episode started out with a very funny patient and a very funny question “ when is the last time you made love” Agnes really shocked both the Doc and me with that. I really liked that she just outright said that and she also made sure that Martin knew you should see the birds with someone you love. I wish we could have seen more of her.

What I really appreciate about Martin is that no matter what he wants to get to the bottom of what happened. To everyone else it didn’t matter what was wrong with Agnes and what made her try to fly with the birds because she died, but to Martin it didn’t matter. He needed to find closure in what he witnessed. I do wonder if it is something that calms him when something happens that he can’t explain.

Martin and Louisa’s relationship really is a complete rollercoaster and even if you just watched this episode then you would be able to see that. I thought that their bird watching date idea was such a cute scene, the way they both walked towards each other and decided on ‘going together but not going TOGETHER’.

Then to have them decide after the whole debacle to go on a date and have their food and drinks that they made was adorable. I was so happy for Martin when he got up the courage to kiss Louisa, they really didn’t hold back. However as much as I loved the moment, it was so heartbreaking to watch Mark see them kiss and whilst he was calling Martin too. It’s really going to crush him, especially when he always calls Martin his best friend and to him Louisa was the love of his life.

I think the moment at Louisa’s house was the first time we got to see the Doc push someone away who was getting close, I don’t know what he was actually feeling but his facial expressions were not matching the words coming out of his mouth. I am really hoping that we get a resolution to why he brushed Lousia off, especially when their kiss was as passionate as it was. It’s not like it didn’t mean anything.

The ambulance scenes with Peter are what made this episode really come together, it was such an emotional watch and we finally got to see the Doc push through his fear of blood. He really has come to care for Peter, even if he does annoy him. Josh Charles deserves an Emmy for the way he acted during those scenes. It felt like I was really watching someone struggle with a fear of blood whilst also doing everything he could to keep a little boy alive.

The end of this episode was a really nice closing moment, even after all the craziness it brought it back to a really grounded moment. The longing looks between Martin and Louisa whilst Elaine was reading the poem were perfect. We also had the comment of Elaine applying to Drama School in NYC, I’m very interested to see where that storyline is going to go.

I am so incredibly glad that Best Medicine has been renewed for a second season. I can’t wait to see more of these marvelous episodes!
