Authorities say a 12-year-old Georgia girl has died days after she collapsed on the street following a physical fight near a school bus stop in her Villa Rica neighborhood. Jada West, a student at Mason Creek Middle School, was taken to a hospital last Thursday afternoon after she reportedly went into cardiac arrest.
According to the Associated Press, a video shared on social media showed West and another girl yelling at each other from a distance before approaching one another and fighting. During the altercation, both girls fell onto the pavement. West reportedly landed on her back and rolled backward, feet first. An adult intervened and stopped the fight, telling West to go home. The video shows her picking up her bookbag and walking away. But she never made it home.
Cardiac Arrest Call After the Fight
Sgt. Spencer Crawford said paramedics responded to a call about a “young juvenile who was in cardiac arrest, lying in the street.” When police and EMTs arrived, an adult was performing CPR on West. She was transported to a local hospital.
Her mother, Rashunda McClendon, later asked for prayers on Facebook, writing that her daughter was fighting for her life.
Days later, West’s aunt, De’Quala McClendon, confirmed that the 12-year-old had passed away.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fight and West’s death. The Douglas County School System released a statement remembering West as an “upbeat, kind, and vibrant student.”
However, officials clarified that the incident did not occur during school hours and that there is currently no evidence linking it to on-campus activity. Authorities have not announced any charges at this time.
The investigation remains active.
