On Monday (March 16), President Trump sat in the Oval Office as he took questions from reporters. During questioning, Trump mentioned that he was recently speaking with “a fantastic person, who’s Cuban and made a fortune in sugar.”
That man is José “Pepe” Fanjul — a Cuban-born businessman and the second eldest of the Fanjul brothers. The Fanjul Family controls Fanjul Corp — a vast sugar and real estate conglomerate valued at $8.2 billion. The corporation comprises the subsidiaries Domino Sugar, Florida Crystals, C&H Sugar, Redpath Sugar, former Tate & Lyle sugar companies, and American Sugar Refining.
Fanjul Corp. also owns a 35% stake in Central Romana Corporation of La Romana, Dominican Republic. Additionally, José Fanjul’s wife, Emilia May Fanjul, is on Trump’s Kennedy Center board.

After mentioning, José Fanjul, Trump continued to share that he learned the family wants to “go back to Cuba.” Trump said:
“His family wants to go back to Cuba, to visit it. They haven’t been back in like 50 years or something. They largely come from Cuba. And, we’ll see what happens. They were asking me about that. They want to go back, not only Fanjul, a lot of Cubans have said, ‘Oh, boy would they love to go back.’ I think Cuba, I don’t know, in its own way, with their tourism and everything else, it’s a beautiful island. Great weather. They’re not in a hurricane zone, which is nice for a change. You know? They won’t be asking us for money for hurricanes every week.
But, I think Cubans see—you know, all my life I’ve been hearing about the United States and Cuba. When will the United States do it? I do believe I’ll [have] the honor of taking Cuba. That’s big honor. Taking Cuba in some form. Taking Cuba. I mean, whether I free it, take it, I think I can do anything I want with hit. You want to know the truth? They’re a very weakened nation right now. They were for a long time. Very violent leaders.”
President Trump goes on to mention Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl Castro. He said:
“Castro is a very violent leader. His brother is a very violent leader, extremely violent. That’s how they governed. They governed with violence. But a lot of people would like to go back.”
