It’s not every day that a filmmaker like Steven Spielberg showers praise on a horror movie in a way that actually reshapes his own creative ambitions. But that’s exactly what just happened with Weapons, the latest film from director Zach Cregger.

Spielberg recently opened up about the film, and his reaction goes beyond simple admiration. It actually left him feeling completely fulfilled as a horror fan. Spielberg explained:

“I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch.”

He went on to talk about Weapons and how it affected him:

“When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.”

That’s kind of wild when you think about it. This is the filmmaker behind Jaws and Poltergiest. When the guy responsible for that level of cinematic terror says your movie scratched the horror itch so perfectly that he doesn’t feel compelled to jump into the genre again, you’ve clearly done something right.

Cregger’s Weapons is already carving out a strong legacy, and it looks like the story isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

A prequel centered on Aunt Gladys is currently in development under the working title Gladys, with Cregger co-writing alongside Zach Shields. That project is expected to dig deeper into the mythology that made Weapons hit so hard.

Before that, Cregger is gearing up for something completely different but just as exciting. He’s taking on a new vision of the Resident Evil franchise, with his reboot set for a theatrical release on September 18, 2026.

As for Spielberg, he’s not stepping away from big storytelling anytime soon. His next film, Disclosure Day, takes him back into alien territory and is set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026.

So while Spielberg may still flirt with the idea of making a full-on horror film someday, Weapons seems to have put that urge on pause.
