The chapter may have closed on season 3 of Shrinking, but several stars from the series are already envisioning what their characters’ futures might be.
Warning: Spoilers for the Shrinking season 3 finale below.
After Shrinking premiered in 2023 with grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) rapidly approaching rock bottom in the wake of his wife’s death, season 3 saw his lovable band of friends and family adjusting to their new normal — and ready to expand.
For fellow therapist Gaby (Jessica Williams), that meant opening up her own trauma center and ultimately popping the question to love interest Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.).
“I love Gaby just as a character, I love her as a person. I just want her to be happy. I want everybody to be happy. … I work for the writers and Bill Lawrence and our executive producers, and my job is to just show up and not judge the character and be present in the moment. For Gaby, I just wanted to be happy, no matter what that looks like,” Williams exclusively told Us Weekly ahead of the season 3 finale earlier this year of what could be in store for Gaby. (Shrinking season 4 has been renewed by AppleTV.)
Liz (Christa Miller), the well-meaning but overbearing empty nester, and husband Derek (Ted McGinley) are preparing to travel abroad with Gaby and Derrick — while also gearing up to enter their next chapter as grandparents.

“Liz is going to take control again being a grandma,” McGinley exclusively told Us earlier this year of what he suspects for his TV wife’s future. “I have no idea how much different Derek will be as a grandparent than he was as a father. So that’s kind of fun to see, but I always hope that they stay together. I think that they will. I hope that Derek lives, you know, all that stuff.”
He continued, “But I think what was really enriching for me personally this year was to see Derek’s impact on the other characters. Like, they really cared what happened to Derek. It made me so emotional reading it that they would allow Derek to matter. [It] just meant a lot to me.”
Miller, for her part, has hopes for her character that echo Williams’ sentiment.
“I hope Liz can continue to open up her world and do more things and find things that make her happy and feel that she has a purpose that doesn’t have to do with having children,” Miller exclusively told Us earlier this year. “My psychiatrist, Phil Stutz, always says your life should get bigger when you get older, not smaller. So I hope Liz’s life keeps getting bigger.”
And, obviously, filled with more rocks. “She is always doing rocks,” Miller said.
Shrinking seasons 1-3 are now streaming on AppleTV.
