George Lucas has spent decades watching Hollywood evolve, and if there’s one thing he thinks has changed for the worse, it’s how much power studios give to audience reactions before a movie even has a chance to speak for itself.
The Star Wars creator believes too many studios are chasing fan approval instead of trusting the filmmakers they’ve hired to tell a story. It’s an interesting perspective coming from someone whose own work has been dissected, celebrated, and criticized by generations of fans.
Speaking in an interview with A Rabbit’s Foot, Lucas explained why he’s never been a fan of letting audience feedback steer the creative process.
“I don’t like focus groups. The audience doesn’t know what they want to see. If they don’t like a character, that’s interesting, and as a filmmaker I want to find out why. But when the studios hear that, they take the wrong message.”
Lucas believes studios often overreact to that feedback, making creative decisions based on short-term audience opinions instead of trusting the people making the movie.
“They let the audience actually make the movie. Of course, now they go crazy with that. Now, it’s all about what the fans think. That isn’t how you make the movie. You make a movie by finding someone that knows how to make movies, that has a story to tell and is passionate about it.”
It’s a philosophy that probably won’t surprise anyone familiar with Lucas’ career. He has always followed his own instincts, even when those choices sparked backlash.
While today’s movie business is heavily driven by box office numbers, review aggregators, and social media reactions, Lucas still believes filmmaking succeeds when it connects with audiences on a deeper emotional level.
“You go to the movies because the stories move you emotionally,” he said. “Art is an emotional medium.”
Lucas also pointed out that many of the complaints fans have today aren’t all that different from the criticism he faced decades ago while building the Star Wars saga.
Looking back at the original trilogy, he recalled that audiences and critics pushed back against elements that eventually became iconic parts of the franchise.
“The critics and the fans who were 10 years old when they saw the first one and 13 when they saw the second one complained that they didn’t want to see a children’s film,” recalled Lucas.
“Oh, that’s terrible. Jar Jar Binks is terrible!… Everyone said the same thing about R2-D2 and C-3PO. At the beginning, there was a huge push for me to get rid of C-3PO, and then in the third one [Return of the Jedi], people said the same thing about Ewoks.”
Whether fans agree with his examples or not, Lucas makes an interesting point. Some of the characters that received criticism early on eventually became fan favorites, while others continue to divide audiences years later. Either way, his argument is that creative decisions shouldn’t be made by committee.
That doesn’t mean Lucas ignores criticism altogether. In fact, there are a few people whose opinions he values immensely, and they’re some of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
“I had a group of friends I went to school with: Marty Scorsese, Francis [Ford Coppola], Steven [Spielberg]. We were all students at the same time, and we all know each other really well. When I show them a movie and they make comments, I know where they’re coming from.”
Getting notes from Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg is a little different than chasing whatever happens to be trending online.
Lucas’ comments also tap into a conversation that’s become increasingly common across Hollywood. Studios want franchises that keep fans happy, but there’s always a balancing act between giving audiences what they expect and allowing filmmakers the freedom to surprise them.
If every creative choice is filtered through fan reactions, there’s a good chance movies become safer, more predictable, and less willing to take risks. Also, the audiences aren’t filmmakers or storytellers!
Considering Lucas built one of the biggest film franchises in history by trusting his own creative instincts, it’s easy to understand why he believes filmmakers should lead the way, even if audiences don’t always know what they want until they finally see it on the big screen.
