Critical Music founder Kasra is set to release a charity mixtape through Berlin-based record label Never Sleep. Featuring MCs Mantmast and GQ, the tape was recorded live at London’s famed fabric club during Critical Sound’s 15th anniversary event in 2017.

The recording comes as part of fabric’s Never Sleep charity tape series and honours the late fabric programmer Shaun Roberts, who tragically died in December 2022 after a long battle with colorectal cancer. A key member of fabric from its opening in 1999 and a pioneer in the U.K. dance music scene, Roberts was beloved for bringing emerging DJs into London nightclubs.

In addition to his 16-year-tenure as fabric’s beloved promoter, Roberts played a pivotal role in overseeing the curation of the 100-volume FABRICLIVE compilation series, which featured mixes from the likes of Andy C, Four Tet and Daniel Avery, among others. In memory of Roberts, who granted Kasra the residency at FABRICLIVE, all proceeds will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK.

“When the Never Sleep crew asked me to contribute to their mix series I knew I’d like to honour Shaun and help raise some money and awareness for Bowel Cancer UK,” Kasra explained. “Without Shaun and people like him taking chances on people like me the music landscape would look very different.”

The tape has been made available both digitally and as a cassette through Bandcamp. A tribute not only to Roberts but also to his legacy that continues to thrive in the club’s dynamic lineups, the compilation offers a fierce, dub-infused sound.

The special release will also be commemorated by an exclusive launch event at London’s Phonica Records on November 3rd, featuring limited edition packaging and tape colorways.
