John Lithgow on Queer Family Film ‘Jimpa,’ Olivia Colman: Rotterdam

Hi /r/movies! I’m Jared Bush, director of ZOOTROPOLIS 2 & ENCANTO and Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Ask me anything!

Matthew Vaughn recently talked to Empire and opened up about the harsh negative reviews that critics unleashed on Argylle.

When asked if the reviews disappointed him, he said: “F–k yeah. We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the Snatch days where there was such excitement.

He went on to explain, “And I started drinking the Kool-Aid. It’s a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie. We didn’t make Citizen Kane, but f–king hell, then the reviews came out and I’m like, ‘Wait, what have I done to offend these people?’”

He continued: “They were vitriolic. I’m not saying the movie’s perfect by any means, but I didn’t think it was offensive. That took me by surprise.”

Vaughn went on to say: “I even went round to cinemas because I thought, ‘Maybe I’ve lost the plot now.’ It did rattle me. I’m genuinely scratching my head about that, because you can’t ignore it. It wasn’t like [just] a few bad reviews.”

I thought the movie was a lot of fun! It was unique, it was original, it played out like a wild and crazy live-action cartoon that didn’t take itself too seriously. The movie knew exactly what it was and didn’t pretend to be anything else. It was a silly fun action flick!

The movie is no on Apple TV+ and it’s doing well there with the filmmaker saying: “We’re doing very well on streaming. People are liking it. Nothing would make me happier than making another one.”

He added” “I’m getting texts saying, ‘Wow, those reviews were f–king harsh!’ The more we can get people to watch Argylle, the more chance we make another one. I’d love to make another one, we’ve got it planned.”

We’ll just have to wait and see if Vaughn gets to make another movie, though. The film was planned as a big franchise, but with how hard the movie bombed at the box office, there’s a good chance it won’t happen.

Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway in the movie, “the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie.

But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

The movie features an all-star cast that includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson.
