Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is the long awaited return of Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard’s Mera to the big screen. The film’s synopsis suggests they won’t be returning alone, with their son bringing a new focus on fatherhood to the film.

Despite the film releasing in less than 100 days, details about Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom have been kept close to the chest by DC Studios. While the recent teaser confirmed the return of characters like Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry, Amber Heard’s Mera, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, not much new was shown. However, a new synopsis for the film seemingly confirms the appearance of Aquaman’s son, Arthur Curry Jr., in the film:

“All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne…”

“Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.”

It may come as a shock to many fans that Arthur Curry Jr. will appear in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. The character was only a staple of the comics for a decade in the 60s to 70s before being murdered by Black Manta in Death of a Prince, a shockingly dark comic both for the time and for such a positive character. It’s unclear if Aquaman and Mera’s son will face the same fate at the hands of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but it certainly doesn’t look good for the child.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
