Netflix’s television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman lurks in the form of Season 2, which will likely arrive over two years after Season 1 first debuted on the streamer in August 2022.

Netflix also launched Dead Boy Detectives, based on another of Gaiman’s comic books set within the universe of The Sandman in April 2024, which adds layers to the story and realm. Season 2 paused production during the double strike in Hollywood in 2023, but now that they are back on track, casting news has been announced as the finish line is becoming less Endless for the next installment of the series.

Read on for everything we knew about The Sandman Season 2:

Is The Sandman Season 2 in production?

November 29, 2023, saw the second installment of The Sandman return to production. Neil Gaiman, who wrote the comic books on which the series is based, wrote a letter about the re-start of production in addition to posting a behind-the-scenes photo of stars Tom Sturridge and Mason Alexander Park.

“A journey is beginning that will take us from Destiny’s garden to Hell, from the Heart of the Dreaming to Ancient Greece and revolutionary France,” Gaiman wrote in his letter. “And from there to places even I cannot quite imagine on the screen. I will be patient. Good things are coming.”

What happened in Season 1 of The Sandman?

The Sandman, aka Dream (Sturridge) — a powerful cosmic being who controls dreams, was captured by occultists and held prisoner for over a century before he was able to escape. His captors, who held him prisoner for 105 years, were aiming to imprison his older sister, Death. Season 1 follows his journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos in his absence.

Dream is one of the seven Endless, a family of physical manifestations of aspects of the universe. The rest of the family members are listed above.

How are The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives connected?

The main characters of Dead Boy Detectives Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Paine (George Rexstrew) first appeared within The Sandman #25 comic. Dead Boy Detectives was originally planned as a spinoff of Max’s Doom Patrol series, but when the series shifted to Netflix, there was more opportunity to connect it to The Sandman, as the streamer holds both shows.

Death (Kirby), who is The Sandman’s sister, pursues Charles and Edwin to take them to the afterlife, which was changed from the comic’s plot, in which she reluctantly lets them stay on Earth. She appears in Episode 1 of The Dead Boy Detectives. Despair, another member of the cosmic Endless family who oversees humanity and sometimes meddles in their lives, also appears in Dead Boy Detectives.

Other connections made in the comic books like hell’s landscape and Lucifer’s role in Edwin’s escape from hell, were differentiated in Dead Boy Detectives since The Sandman series hasn’t reached that point in the plot yet, known as Season of Mists backstory.
