On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York presented articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. This action was taken due to their decision not to disqualify themselves from participating in specific legal cases.

During her speech on the House floor, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her belief that the actions of Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito are jeopardizing the integrity of the legal system. “Absent resignation, they must be removed,” she said. “Because of Alito’s and Thomas’s refusals to recuse, everyday Americans cannot, should not, and will not, believe that these justices, and consequently the court they serve, is working to uphold the Constitution and put the country ahead of their own individual self interests.”
“Reasonable Americans will and do believe that Justices Thomas and Alito are prone and subject to corruption, that the institution failing to punish them is broken, and that consequently their impeachment is a constitutional imperative and our congressional duty,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

According to the New York congresswoman, both justices have shown a “years-long pattern of misconduct and failure to recuse in cases bearing their clear personal and financial involvement.”
This, she said, “represents an abuse of power and threat to our democracy, fundamentally incompatible with continued service on our nation’s highest court.”
