Chilli, the late Left Eye, and T-Boz, famously known as TLC, made an enduring impact on the ’90s music scene by merging R&B, hip hop, and pop with socially conscious themes. However, their journey to becoming one of the best-selling girl groups in history was marked by arduous dedication and hard work.

In a recent interview on Black America Web’ My First Time series, shared on July 8 via the outlet’s Instagram, Chilli recounted the rigorous preparation they underwent for their inaugural tour and press run. The trio navigated the “Chitlin Circuit,” a pivotal platform for emerging Black artists in the South and Midwest. Chilli shared insights into their relentless schedule, including early morning rehearsals starting at “5 in the morning” and a whirlwind of radio interviews, illustrating their tireless commitment to their craft.

“You’re working all day, and at night, you’re performing at different radio shows and stuff like that…It was a lot of fun,” she said.

The girls ramped up on performances and interviews shortly before the release of their first studio album Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip which debuted in February 1992. The album spawned hits like “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” and “What About Your Friends.”

“We were prepared because we rehearsed in rehearsals way before the album came out,” Chilli added.

Their hard work paid off as TLC went on to make history. Throughout the ’90s, the iconic girl group distinguished themselves with popular songs that intertwined themes of self-independence, self-respect and female empowerment. The group achieved remarkable commercial success with their second album CrazySexyCool (1994), which sold 14 million copies in the United States alone and attained diamond certification, according to Rolling Stone. Featuring chart-topping singles such as “Waterfalls” and “Creep,” the album solidified TLC’s global impact.

The group also achieved multiple Grammy Awards during their career, winning two in 1996 for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (for “Creep”), and adding two more in 2000 for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for FanMail, their third album, which featured hits like “No Scrubs” and “Unpretty.”

Unfortunately, their success was marred by the tragic passing of Left Eye in a car accident. Despite this loss, T-Boz and Chilli have persevered as a duo, continuing to tour across the United States to honor the group’s legacy. Chilli and T-Boz are currently preparing for a tour alongside Jordin Sparks and Shaggy starting in late July, with stops planned for Paso Robles, California, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and several other locations.
