In June, during a conversation with fans on Snapchat, Latto shared that she had some regrets about getting a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), a popular cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks by first performing liposuction to remove excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. The fat is then purified and injected into the buttocks to create a fuller, more shapely appearance.
The “Big Energy” hitmaker revealed that she gained “a little weight” when she signed her first record deal at the age of 20. With newfound fame and money flooding in at such a young age, Latto eagerly embraced her success, indulging in top-notch foods. However, her weight gain attracted harsh criticism from social media bullies.
“Everybody on the internet was calling me ‘bad body’ and stuff, so, I feel like that played a role,” the 24-year-old rapper said when asked by a fan why she opted for cosmetic surgery. “I started being a little insecure about my body.”
Latto continued, “I was just young and impressionable. So yeah, to answer the question… looking back on it bitch, I didn’t need that.” Latto also shared a throwback photo from high school, showcasing her slender frame in a striking green bikini. The Clayton County, Georgia native looked stunning, highlighting her natural beauty.
Is a BBL dangerous?
BBL surgery has been the fastest-growing aesthetic surgical procedure over the past decade, but its popularity appears to wane. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2019, around 28,076 BBL procedures were performed. That number dropped to 21,823 in 2020. Interestingly, in a 2023 interview with Connect, plastic surgeon Dr. Joe Hadeed noted that patients increasingly choose smaller BBL implants.
“I sense that the pendulum is starting to swing back the other way a little bit. But now I think you are starting to see that shift. They may still be interested in a BBL but want a more natural look,” Hadeed added.
While the BBL can achieve significant aesthetic improvements and body contouring, it is associated with considerable risks. The procedure can lead to complications such as infections and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Shockingly, in 2017, the risk of death from pulmonary fat embolism (PFE) was identified, making the BBL the highest mortality rate among aesthetic surgical procedures. PFE occurs when fat enters the bloodstream and travels to the lungs or other vital organs. South Florida has notably the highest BBL mortality rate in the nation.
Tragically, there have been several deaths associated with this risky procedure. A July 2017 report from the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal revealed that two out of every 6,000 BBLs result in death. Even more alarming, 3% of the 692 surgeons surveyed admitted to having experienced a patient’s death following a BBL. The procedure remains costly despite these risks, ranging from $3,000 to $30,000, according to The New York Times.
Rapper DreamDoll recently claimed BBLs were “no longer in fashion.”
Latto isn’t the first celeb to talk openly about their plastic surgery regrets. Earlier this month, DreamDoll, real name Tabatha Robinson, revealed that she was determined to transition back to her natural body, citing how “slim, thick” bodies are the trend right now.
In a clip shared on Zeze Millz’s Instagram page on July 23, the Bronx-bred rapper spoke about the pressure she experienced upon entering the entertainment industry to alter her body. “I was working in that environment, and it made me want to do it.” Millz asked the New York femcee if she, too, felt “pressure” to go under the knife.
DreamDoll replied, “Yeah, but it’s like I went and got surgery, and now I want to transition back to my natural body.”
When Millz asked the beautiful rapper if she thought BBLs were no longer in fashion, DreamDoll answered with a resounding, “Yeah!”
She added, “I feel like natural bodies and slim, slim thick [bodies] are in right now,” citing how her natural physique was slim. The star jokingly added that before her BBL, she had “NASATA. No A** At All.”
DreamDoll is now focused on achieving a more natural look. In a 2022 interview with Angela Yee, the Bronx native shared the challenges she faced in removing her hazardous silicone butt injections— a procedure where liquid silicone is injected into the buttocks to enhance their size and shape.
During her conversation on Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast, DreamDoll disclosed that she underwent four reconstructive surgeries to give her backside a more natural appearance. When Yee inquired about the motivation behind her reconstructive journey, DreamDoll admitted that the injections had started to cause her significant pain.
