DC’s Peter Safran Says Nicholas Hoult Is ‘Lex Luthor for Next Generation’

Following the recent Netflix debut of Logan Lucky, fans have been speculating about the potential for a prequel centered around Daniel Craig’s character, Joe Bang. Craig’s performance in the 2017 heist comedy was a standout. It showcased his versatility with a quirky Southern accent and visual style. The character’s appeal and the film’s critical success made a Joe Bang-focused prequel or Logan Lucky 2 a natural next step.

Here is everything we know about the potential Logan Lucky 2 and whether it will make it to the screen.

Why was Logan Lucky’s Joe Bang prequel scrapped?

Steven Soderbergh, director of the 2017 film Logan Lucky, recently disclosed that a potential sequel was scrapped due to disappointing box office returns.

In a Reddit AMA, Soderbergh revealed that the plans for a Logan Lucky prequel centered on Craig’s character, Joe Bang. The story would have explored how Bang ended up in prison. Soderbergh attributed the lack of a sequel to the disappointing commercial performance of the original film. He said, “WELL, we had a prequel all teed up about how Joe Bang got thrown in jail, but when the movie didn’t perform well enough to justify another go, we dropped the idea.”

Craig’s portrayal of Joe Bang in the film was a standout performance. The character, a skilled explosives expert, was instrumental in Logan and his crew’s heist. After breaking Bang out of prison, they recruited him to create the explosive device that would facilitate their daring escape.

Speaking to GQ, Soderbergh explained how he had given Craig complete autonomy on how he wanted to approach the character. “I said to him, ‘I don’t care how you look. I don’t care how you sound. And you don’t have to do any press if you don’t want to.’ Because I know that going on the Bond press tour is, for him, harder than doing the movie,” he said.

Soderbergh continued, “So the ideas would come in in dribs and drabs. ‘Here’s some tattoos. Here’s my haircut. I’m working with a dialect guy.’ Then he showed up with it; he was ready.”

Could there be a Logan Lucky sequel after its Netflix success?

With no new comments by Soderbergh or Craig, it seems unlikely that a Logan Lucky prequel is in the cards.

The movie was recently added to Netflix, nearly eight years after its theatrical debut. As it gains popularity on the streaming platform, there’s renewed hope for a prequel. Unfortunately, the creators have yet to confirm plans for the project. Therefore, it’s unlikely that we’ll see Craig reprise his role as Joe Bang anytime soon.
