On Wednesday evening (September 25), amid a federal corruption investigation, New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted by a federal grand jury in New York and became the first sitting mayor of New York City to be criminally charged, according to the New York Times.

The report follows a federal corruption investigation that saw several people in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration resigning. The investigation began over a year ago and also saw several searches and seizures of the Mayor’s electronics, and subpoenas for other materials, assets, and information. The report also follows Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling for his immediate resignation “for the good of the City.”

In a statement to the NY Times, AOC said she could “not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City.” She added, “The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening government function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration. For the good of the city, he should resign.”

According to the NY Times, the indictment for corruption remained sealed as of Wednesday evening and it is unclear what the exact charge or charges are levied against Mayor Adams. However, when they are made public, likely on Tuesday morning, Mayor Adams will become the first New York City mayor to be criminally charged while still in office.

Additionally, the publication notes, “The indictment promised to reverberate across the nation’s largest city and beyond, plunging Mr. Adams’s embattled administration further into chaos just months before he is set to face challengers in a hotly contested mayoral primary.”

In a statement shared amid being indicted, New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed citizens and said, “My fellow New Yorkers. It is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes. If so, these charges would be entirely false, based on lies. But they would not be surprising.”

He explained, “I always knew that If I stood my ground for all of you that I would be a target—and a target I became. For months, leaks and rumors have been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and paint me as guilty. Just this past week they searched the home of our new police commissioner, looking for documents from 20 years ago—but just one week after he joined my administration.”

Continuing to speak amid being indicted for corruption, Mayor Eric Adams added, “Enough. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength, and my spirit. If I am charged, I know I am innocent. I will request an immediate trial so that New Yorkers can hear the truth. New Yorkers know my story. They know where I come from. I have been fighting injustice my entire life. That fight has continued as your mayor. Despite our pleas, when the federal government did nothing as its broken immigration policies overloaded our shelter system with no relief, I put the people of New York before party and politics.”

Adams insisted, “Now, if I am charged, many may say I should resign because I cannot manage the city while fighting the case. I can also understand how everyday New Yorkers would be concerned that I cannot do my job while I face accusations. Now, if I am charged, many may say I should resign because I cannot manage the city while fighting the case. I can also understand how everyday New Yorkers would be concerned that I cannot do my job while I face accusations. Make no mistake: you elected me to lead this city—and lead it I will. I humbly ask for your prayers and your patience as we see this through. God bless you and God bless the City of New York. Thank you.”
