On Monday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles revealed that it will eliminate the requirement for most drivers aged 70 and above to complete a written knowledge test when renewing their licenses.
Previously, all drivers aged 70 and older were required to take a written knowledge test upon the expiration of their licenses. However, these drivers will still need to go to a DMV office for a vision test and to have their photo updated during the renewal process.

According to the DMV, drivers who have been involved in two or more accidents over the last two years, three or more accidents in the past three years, have experienced a DUI suspension within the last two years, or have accumulated more than one violation point in the past two years will still need to take the knowledge test.
Additionally, first-time drivers, newcomers to California, and individuals with unfavorable driving records will also be required to complete the written exam.
Regarding the driving test, the DMV may mandate a reexamination for senior drivers if their recent medical or physical evaluations indicate issues that could impact their driving abilities.

By law, physicians must report any medical conditions or disorders that could lead to loss of consciousness or control, as well as other health issues that might impair safe vehicle operation, according to the DMV.
Additionally, family members, friends, and neighbors can reach out to the DMV if they have concerns about an individual’s driving safety.
