Tom Cruise is in talks with Paramount Pictures to star in a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR drama Days of Thunder.
The original film was directed by Tony Scott and written by Robert Towne. It is a high-octane sports drama that follows Cole Trickle (Cruise), a hot-headed young race car driver, as he enters the world of NASCAR with big dreams but little experience.
Guided by seasoned crew chief Harry Hogge, Cole learns to harness his raw talent and navigate the intense rivalries and dangers of professional racing. Initially, Cole’s aggressive style leads to conflicts with veteran driver Rowdy Burns, as well as challenges that put his career in jeopardy.
With Harry’s tough mentorship, Cole begins to understand the strategy, precision, and team effort required to succeed on the racetrack.
I haven’t watched Days of Thunder in a long time, but I remember it being an ok movie. There are no details regarding the creative direction of the film and no other creative talent is attached. It’ll be interesting to see who the studio brings out to direct.
Cruise is currently prepping to shoot a new a new film with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu film for Warner Bros and Legendary. The actor is next set to appear in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which is coming out May 23, 2025.
