Over the weekend, Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter was honored as the best college football player of the year at a prestigious ceremony in New York. The talented athlete delivered an emotional speech while accepting his award, expressing gratitude to his fans, his coach Deion Sanders, and his family, including his father.

“I want to say something to my father. He’s not here and wasn’t able to make it but I know you’re watching on TV. Dad, I love you. For all the stuff you went through man. Now look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man,” a tearful Hunter shared. He continued, “All the times that you didn’t get to see me, or the times you did come to see my games. From not seeing probably two games in high school to seeing me on TV every weekend and coming to see me. That means so much to me. I know you wanted to be here and you can’t, but trust me, I got you. I’m bringing the trophy home. I love you.”

The 21-year-old wasn’t the only one moved to tears that day. A heartwarming clip captured his father, Hunter Sr., breaking down as he watched his son on TV dedicate this significant moment to him.

In December, Travis Hunter Sr. was released three weeks early from a 90-day prison sentence related to a crime he committed in 2023.

Travis Hunter is the first defensive and two-way player to win the award since 1997, and he is also the first player from the Buffaloes to receive this honor in 30 years. The team’s last winner was running back Rashaan Salaam, who won the award back in 1994.
