It’s looking like we’ve got a very long way to go before we see Matt Reeves jump into production on The Batman: Part II.

James Gunn recently took to social media to deny rumors that Clayface and Scarecrow will make appearances in the sequel and revealed that a first draft of a script for the sequel has not even been submitted.

I thought for sure a first draft of a script for The Batman: Part II would be done by now, so this is surprising news! Pattinson recently joked, “I could genuinely be retiring by the end of them,” which seems true if the creative team is taking this long to develop the films!

What’s interesting about this comment from Gunn, is that it’s in contradiction to what Reeves previously shared. He said a few months ago in a previous interview:

“We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC, and they’re super excited. It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn’t even anticipate in the first one.”

So, he has actually shared a script with them. So, why is Gunn saying the opposite? Reeves added: “What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world.

“We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.”

There’s still a 2026 release for the sequel, and we also know that a third film is planned. The question is, if there really is no completed script for The Batman: Part II, will they actually be able to make that 2026 date?
