Is La Palma inspired by a true story or a book? This question has sparked a lot of excitement among fans as Netflix’s latest Spanish suspense drama grabs the attention of viewers with its fascinating plot and engaging characters. Featuring Anders Baasmo and Alma Günther, the series has many wondering if its narrative is based on real events or if it’s purely a work of fiction.

So, let’s explore the inspiration behind the narrative of La Palma and uncover the real origins of this intriguing show.

Is Netflix’s La Palma based on a true story?

Netflix’s La Palma is a work of fiction and does not draw inspiration from any literary source, true events, or real-life occurrences.

La Palma’s thrilling storyline might seem like it’s inspired by real events, but that is not the case. The storyline and visuals of the action-packed series feel so genuine that some viewers are left wondering what’s real and what’s fictional. However, it turns out that the show is entirely a work of fiction but set in an actual place.

La Palma features a make-believe narrative crafted by writers Lars Gudmestad and Harald Rosenløw-Eeg. Moreover, it is set on the real Spanish island of La Palma, home to Cumbre Vieja. The latter is known as the most active volcano in the Canary Islands. As shown in the show, this volcano had its most recent eruption in 2021, which lasted 85 days.

To know a bit of its past, the region is mainly governed by Spain. It is renowned for its towering mountains and expansive forests. Since 1949, La Palma has experienced three major volcanic eruptions. This made it earn a reputation in ecological circles as one of the most volcanically active areas on the planet.

Meanwhile, the realistic action sequences of the Netflix series delve into the theme of ecological terror, making fans believe it to be real. The four-part series smartly utilizes the actual history and landscape of its namesake location, adding to its visual narrative.

Additionally, the story’s timeline coincides with the Cumbre Vieja’s last eruption in late 2021. Some of the plot points in the show also revolve around actual geological phenomena like tsunamis. However, that is the only connection La Palma has to reality. The characters and story are purely a work of its writers’ brilliant imagination and skills.
