The 10 Most Underrated Movies of 2025

Few anime films have left as lasting an impact as Akira. Katsuhiro Otomo’s groundbreaking 1988 anime masterpiece helped define cyberpunk as a genre and elevated anime into mainstream global consciousness.

Akira is now receiving a stunning 4K steelbook re-release, bringing its breathtaking visuals and iconic story back into the spotlight.

Set in an alternate 2019, Akira unfolds in the sprawling dystopia of neo-Tokyo, where biker gangs rule the streets and government experiments push the boundaries of morality.

The story follows Kaneda, a young biker, as he plunges into a battle against powerful forces to save his friend Tetsuo, uncovering secrets that could reshape their world.

For fans and collectors, Crunchyroll’s upcoming special edition re-release comes packaged in a cool red steelbook case, the cover features protagonist Shotaro Kaneda sitting atop a throne of tech rubble, flanked by his iconic motorbike.

This 4K remaster also breathes new life into Akira’s already legendary visuals. The meticulously hand-drawn animation, which has stood the test of time, now shines brighter than ever.

Crunchyroll has also included an impressive array of special features for fans to dive into:

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to revisit neo-Tokyo or experience it for the first time, this re-release is it.
