Since the movie was officially announced in 2022, fans have longed for more information about what the film entails.
Ken Jeong, who played Ben Chang, a Spanish teacher on the NBC sitcom, recently shared a little insight about the project when he spoke about reading the script for the movie.
“It made me emotional, and just brought me right back, and that’s all I’m legally allowed to say,” the Masked Singer judge said in an interview with TV Insider published on Thursday.
While he couldn’t reveal much more, he did say, “There is a script, there is a plan. We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional.”
He added, “I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express.”
Community was revolved around a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College. The cast also included Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash and Chevy Chase, although he left in the fourth season due to a feud with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon.
“When the show was on the air, we had the most devoted fans of any project I’ve ever done. The most devoted fans,” Jeong said.
Harmon previously told The Hollywood Reporter that everyone in the cast had agreed to return for a Community film except Chase.
“The thing that’s going to matter most to me as an audience member or to anybody who loved that show is seeing those people see each other,” he said. “And they still love each other, and it’s not going to feel the same if you’re shooting them separately at different months in different locations.”
Harmon’s biggest priority is making sure the fans are pleased with the film.
“That’s the fandom that’s been the most supportive of me, all told, and has endured the most for supporting me,” he said. “Because I wasn’t thinking about them when I was feuding with Chevy. Only later did I realize that I’d hurt these people who didn’t want to think about me as some kind of odd, self-styled Kubrick. They cared about Greendale, this world that I created, and suddenly, they were getting this unadulterated side order of me, which was not fair to them.
He continued, “I really don’t want to do it wrong, and it is truly terrifying. But then I’m holding on to the hope that being honest with myself about how scared I am is at least a way to break the cycle.”
The series ran from 2009 to 2015 and included six seasons.
