In the wake of Squid Game Season 2’s release, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has come out to claim that the franchise will continue even after the premiere of Season 3. Netflix’s South Korean thriller series took the world by storm in 2021. The debut chapter’s overwhelming response only heightened the anticipation for a sequel edition, which finally came out earlier this week. While the ongoing arc for the show is confirmed to conclude with the upcoming third installment, Squid Game will continue as a franchise, per Dong-hyuk.

Hwang Dong-hyuk hints Squid Game universe could continue after Season 3

The South Korean filmmaker disclosed in a recent interview that Season 3 will not mark the end of Squid Game.

While talking to The Wrap, Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “I know Netflix has a plan [for more Squid Game]. They are not going to throw this idea away.” Netflix has already announced a sequel season for the ongoing spin-off series, Squid Game: The Challenge. Moreover, an English-language adaptation of the show has also received confirmation, with the legendary David Fincher developing the remake.

While talking about the aforementioned projects, Dong-hyuk commented, “Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe.”

Squid Game Season 3, which basically serves as the second part of Season 2, will effectively draw curtains on the story of Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun. As such, it is currently uncertain if Lee will return for the Squid Game projects that will follow the third season. The actor has already etched his presence in the industry with the hit series, famously becoming the first Asian actor ever to secure the Emmy award in the Best Actor in a Drama category.

Squid Game Season 2 is presently available on Netflix, with the third season set to premiere in 2025.
