Governor Kevin Stitt has announced a new initiative to prepare students for life after high school by introducing three milestones: college acceptance, vocational program enrollment, or military enlistment after graduation.

He proposed that high school graduation should include one of three milestones to help students excel in their future jobs. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of introducing financial literacy, equipping students with practical knowledge about managing finances—a critical skill for their future independence. “We are trying to help young people prepare for the future,” he added. According to OKCFox, Joe Dorman, CEO of the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, addressed the need for flexibility for students with special needs or unique circumstances.

He also emphasized the value of life skills education, urging state leaders to prioritize classes that teach daily survival skills. You have so many children graduating who don’t know how to do a load of laundry or use an oven,” Dorman explained.

Dorman emphasized the necessity of essential skills for students, including budgeting, grocery shopping, and comprehending bills. He also underscored the importance of apprenticeships and practical job training as vital elements of a comprehensive education.
