Armie Hammer says his movie career is back on track, so much so he’s picky about roles he takes on these days.
“I’m turning down jobs. My dance card is getting pretty full,” the Call Me By Your Name actor said during an interview on the Your Mom’s House podcast on Wednesday. Hammer talked candidly about his Hollywood comeback after claims of cannibalism, sexual misconduct and rape derailed his career.
“By the way, that first job that I turned down after four years of this shit, it was the best feeling I’ve ever had,” he added about his big-screen acting return. Hammer starred in Frontier Crucible, an upcoming period western starring Thomas Jane and William H. Macy and from director Travis Mills and producer Dallas Sonnier.
And his return from Hollywood exile includes five unspecified movie gigs, Hammer said, including a shoot in Croatia starting this month and a film to start production in the Philippines this spring. “I’ve got these jobs, right? Not a single one of them came through an agent,” Hammer insisted as anyone looking to hire him can contact his lawyer, Todd Rubenstein at York Levin, as he has no Hollywood agent.
As he steps back into acting, Hammer argued returning to Hollywood’s inner circle will take time. “It’s slow, but generally now the conversation when my name comes up with people in the industry is, ‘Man, that guy got fucked.’ And that feels really good. It’s really encouraging,” he told the podcast hosts Christina Pazsitzky and Tom Segura.
Hammer opened up about the backdrop to his career implosion, which was touched off by snippets of sexually charged text messages with various women surfacing in early 2021. That same year a woman named Effie accused him of raping her in 2017. Two other women then came forward and accused Hammer of subjecting them to emotional abuse so severe it led them to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
Hammer countered that the relationships were all consensual sadomasochistic arrangements but conceded he was emotionally abusive to the women. Following an investigation, the Los Angeles County district attorney declined to indict Hammer in 2023, citing insufficient evidence.
Hammer told the Your Mom’s House hosts: “I think somewhere deep down, subconsciously, I wanted to get caught.” He added his deviant lifestyle sprang in part from the unrealistic portrait of Hammer among his fans and detractors of a rich kid-turned-Hollywood star.
“I think I so did not relate to the image of me that was out there in the public — of ‘look at them, they’re the Ralph Lauren family, they’ve got the perfect life and the perfect house and the perfect kids’ – I was, ‘I feel like an alien walking around most of the time,’” Hammer argued.
“I don’t feel like a human. I feel like a creature. … So if I’m going to be a creature, I’m going to be the king of creatures,” he added. But getting dropped in Hollywood, including by talent agency WME and his publicity team, proved devastating to Hammer, however conflicted he may have been by his fame.
“I think I was more just in full panic mode because, to get a little bit serious here, there was this sort of, there was the mask that I didn’t really identify with, but everyone thought was me, that that became sort of my safety net and identity. And then that gets shattered and everyone goes, ‘We no longer like this guy. We fucking hate him,’” Hammer recalled.
His comeback includes a podcast, The Armie HammerTime Podcast, launched last year.
